PART 4. HOW TO USE RECOVERYFOX AI
4.5 Recover Files from External Devices
RecoveryFox AI supports a variety of external devices, including external SSDs, HDDs, memory cards, SD cards, and USB flash drives. If you lost data from an external device, you can also use RecoveryFox AI to retrieve them back.
* Available on: Windows
⚠️ If you suspect data loss on your external hard drive, immediately stop using it to prevent overwriting lost files. Unplug the drive safely (if it's idle) and avoid saving new data or running disk operations. Any further use—such as copying files, formatting, or installing software—can reduce the chances of successful recovery. Keep the drive disconnected until you are ready to perform data recovery with reliable software.
Step 1. Connect Your External Device or Drive
Connect the device to your computer and launch RecoveryFox AI. If your external device has a supported file system (NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT), RecoveryFox AI will show it in the “Your Drives” list.
Step 2. Select the External Device
To recover lost, deleted, or formatted data from your external device, select it as the scan location.
Simply hover your mouse over your device in the list and you’ll see the “Click to Start Scan” button. Click it to start scanning.
Step 3. Scan the External Device
At the bottom of the scanning interface, you can monitor the scanning progress.
The process begins with a Quick Scan, which targets recently lost files and those not overwritten.
Once Quick Scan completes, the AI Scan begins automatically. If your data has been lost for an extended period or if you have made changes after the loss, only AI Scan can attempt to recover your partially overwritten files.
During the AI Scan, you have the option to pause button or stop button the process to check if the files you need are available.
After scanning, you can preview and recover the found files at any time.
Step 4. Preview and Recover Data from External Device
Use our smart filters to easily locate files and then recover them with greater precision.
RecoveryFox AI can restore various file types and also supports previewing all of the popular image, audio, video, and documents formats.
To recover data, check the checkboxes of the file, folder, or subfolder you need and select “Recover”.
Remember not to save the recovered files to the impacted drive.
